March 21, 2023 Meeting Minutes

There were 24 people resent in person,  3 present online.


The meeting began at 7:05 PM. Heather read the February minutes, which were accepted by all. Nick Morgan shared the current budget at Caitlin was not present. We are now able to take payments online on the website. A motion to accept Treasurer’s Report was accepted. 


Steve Davis updated us on the JTAS book festival with TAS Annual Meeting in October. He called for volunteers to help MC the presentations at the festival. He also gave a report on the third Thursday archeology social gathering at Austin Beerworks. This is just a social event. Another one will be in April, on 3rd Thursday 4-6 PM (April 20). Third, Steve mentioned that JTAH is getting into independent research and is looking into sources of funding as a 501(3c). This primarily focused toward archeologists who are retired or who are retiring soon.


Nick Morgan mentioned a few opportunities coming up. There will be work processing Joyful Horse this Saturday (March 25). Significant progress was made last month. Chris Ringstaff is orgainizing a trip to Bowerely Ranch Park on April 15, Time TBD. 


The presentation this month was Dr. Alan Slade. Lithic Analyst/Palaeolithic Researcher, Texas Archeological Research Laboratory, UT-Austin. Alan spent six years studying the Clovis fluted points in collections across North America, largely facilitated and encouraged by Prof. Dennis Stanford of the Smithsonian Institution. Dr. Michael Collins invited Alan to continue his analysis of Clovis fluted point technology and to become a lithic analyst for the project in 2019. From 2019 Alan is directing the Texas Clovis Fluted Point Survey (TCFPS) at TARL. In 2022, Alan initiated a Texas Folsom fluted Point Survey (TFFPS) to complement the Clovis one.
